Surprise Inspections: Where Cleanliness Hides and Panic Cleans

Surprise inspections are the adult version of a pop quiz–with bleach. You hear “they’re coming” and suddenly everyone becomes a janitor, interior decorator, and alibi coordinator. Desks are wiped. Trash disappears. One guy throws a sandwich behind the printer and prays no one finds it. Ever.

The inspector walks in smiling but dead-eyed. “Just a routine check,” they say, which is code for, “I will now examine your soul through the dust on your baseboards.” You fake a laugh. You consider crying. You Febreze your keyboard just in case.

There’s always one person who didn’t get the memo. They’re microwaving fish. Their desk looks like a paper bomb detonated. You whisper “run” and pretend you don’t know them. They are sacrificed to the gods of clipboard justice.

The questions are vague and terrifying. “How often do you sanitize this?” you reply, “Regularly-ish.” “What’s this spill?” “Innovation.” They nod. You die inside.

Surprise inspections are stressful, ridiculous, and occasionally character-building. You leave sweating, exhausted, and convinced you passed by sheer luck and lavender-scented lies. But hey–at least the office has never smelled more lemony. Until next time.
