People Who Treat Karaoke Like It’s Broadway Auditions

Because nothing says “fun night out” like watching someone belt Les Mis with full emotional breakdown.

People Who Treat Karaoke Like It’s Broadway Auditions

Karaoke is supposed to be about bad singing, cheap beer, and forgetting the second verse. But then in walks Hannah, who clearly warmed up in her car and brought sheet music for the pianist who doesn’t exist.

1. They always pick power ballads. No one has ever seen them perform “Sweet Caroline.”

2. They introduce themselves like, “Hi, I’m Jenna. I studied vocal performance at NYU.”

3. They treat the mic like a scene partner. It gets more intimacy than most people’s partners.

4. Their friends are forced to clap like proud moms at a recital instead of laughing at the drunk guy singing “Thong Song.”

5. They hold out the last note of “Defying Gravity” until dogs in another zip code start barking.

6. They bring their own water bottle, which is labeled “Vocal Hydration Only.”

7. The karaoke DJ visibly regrets not faking a power outage.

8. You were next in line to sing “Livin’ on a Prayer,” but now it feels like a hate crime against melody.

9. They gesture dramatically during instrumental breaks, like they’re dying in a Victorian opera.

10. There’s usually one friend recording the whole thing like it’s for a Tony Award submission.

11. They glare if someone sings along from the audience–how dare you harmonize without rehearsal?

12. They always thank the crowd like it’s their farewell tour. “You’ve been an amazing audience!”

13. When they finish, they ask the DJ if he can raise the key “just a half step next time.”

14. They start sentences with “When I played Elphaba…” even if it was for a community theater fundraiser in 2011.

15. Their greatest fear is following someone who just crushed “Bohemian Rhapsody” with zero shame and three margaritas.
