Logging off… but only after 42 Instagram stories announcing it

People Who Brag About Their “Digital Detox” (But Tell Everyone Online)

You haven’t really logged off until you’ve told 1,200 strangers about it. That’s the creed of the modern-day digital detoxer: a person who loudly announces their social media break, documents the goodbye, and checks in hourly to see who noticed.

1. They post a slideshow of themselves staring at trees. Caption: “Sometimes you just have to disconnect to reconnect.” Location tagged. Filter applied. Hashtagged #OfflineVibes.

2. They say they’re deleting the apps but mysteriously still like your vacation photo six minutes later.

3. Their goodbye post includes a quote from the Dalai Lama, an emoji of a leaf, and a selfie.

4. They do Instagram Lives to explain why they’re leaving Instagram.

5. Their “last post” features a 12-paragraph caption about inner peace and a brand collab link in bio.

6. They claim social media is “toxic” but return in three days with a ring light and haul video.

7. They call themselves “off the grid” but have notifications on for every platform.

8. They buy a flip phone “for the aesthetics” and still manage to check Twitter.

9. They’ll tell you they’re “so present now” while taking 87 pictures of their beet salad.

10. They ask you not to tag them… but message you privately when you forget to.

11. They “journal instead of scrolling” and make sure to post their calligraphy pages.

12. They keep a secret burner account so they don’t “completely disappear.”

13. They’re the only people who say “algorithm fatigue” like it’s a medical condition.

14. They’ll host a “mindfulness retreat” that still has Wi-Fi and a TikTok recap.

15. They always come back saying, “I just felt called to share this journey”–translation: engagement dropped and they missed being liked.
