Where Everything Is Ancient, Alpine, and Absolutely Asleep by 9pm

Chur is the only city where Roman ruins, medieval churches, and ski bums coexist in absolute silence. It’s Switzerland’s oldest city — and possibly its sleepiest. If Lucerne is a wedding and Zurich is a stock market, Chur is a nap in a museum with a fondue chaser.

The Old Town is a perfect mix of cobblestone charm and audible footstep anxiety. You’ll whisper “wow” as you pass Gothic fountains and frescoed houses — then realize you’re the loudest thing for six blocks.

Everything closes early. Like, suspiciously early. You’ll finish dinner at 7 p.m. and find the streets empty except for one elderly man walking a cat and whistling Gregorian chants. That’s nightlife here.

But don’t underestimate it — this town has layers. Romans lived here. Bronze Age people lived here. Your Airbnb is probably haunted by a prehistoric cheese merchant who wants you to appreciate Alpine dairy more.

The train station is your portal to the Glacier Express, aka the most Instagrammable train since Hogwarts. It’s less about speed, more about sobbing at mountain views while holding overpriced sandwiches.

Public transport is, of course, absurdly on time. Your bus arrives when your watch says it *might*. Chur doesn’t believe in delays — or spontaneity. Or volume above “gentle murmur.”

The local dialect is Romansh, one of Switzerland’s official languages and 100% unintelligible to outsiders. Even Google Translate just shrugs and recommends cheese.

Dining involves hearty Alpine fare. Rösti, barley soup, and capuns — dumplings wrapped in chard leaves, which are far tastier than they sound, especially when paired with the ambient noise of a clock ticking in an empty restaurant.

You’ll leave Chur rested, historically enriched, and slightly addicted to orderly silence. Bring hiking boots, a thermos, and your quietest whisper voice. You’ll need all three.
