Why Bad Advice Blogs Are the Life Coaches We Never Asked For
Bad advice blogs have become the unpaid interns of the wellness world–bold, confident, and wildly unqualified. They offer such gems as “manifest wealth by microwaving your wallet” and “drink celery juice to erase student loans.” One popular blog suggested solving breakups by blocking people on Venmo and reinventing yourself as a cactus influencer.
These bloggers are usually named Skylar or Jett and begin every post with “Hey Bestie!” followed by 800 words of contradictions and crop-top wisdom. They write with the conviction of someone who once read a quote misattributed to Einstein and never looked back. In a recent post, one blog advised readers to overcome imposter syndrome by yelling “I’m the CEO of my vibe” at morning traffic.
Readers report mixed results. One man tried “moon journaling” to heal his inner child but instead attracted raccoons. Another followed a minimalist blog’s advice to declutter by selling all his belongings–including his Wi-Fi router–and now mails his tweets in.
Despite the nonsense, these blogs endure. Why? Because actual therapists are expensive, and it’s easier to follow a stranger who types with glitter fonts and signs off every post with “Stay chaotic, queen.”
