Arosa Travel Humor

Where Marmots Run the Show and Spa Robes Are Streetwear

Arosa is the only town where marmots are local celebrities, spa robes are acceptable public attire, and the air is so clean it could probably co-sign a loan. It’s Switzerland’s cozy Alpine hug — a town that encourages you to hike hard, soak long, and emotionally bond with wildlife.

Getting to Arosa involves a train so scenic you’ll forget to check your phone, then panic when you realize you’ve been staring out the window for 72 minutes straight. It’s fine. Your serotonin needed that.

The town sits at the end of a deep valley like a shy genius: quiet, beautiful, and low-key smug about its elevation. You’ll arrive, breathe deeply, and immediately feel like someone who shops at organic markets and has firm opinions about herbal tea blends.

In summer, Arosa’s marmot trail is the main attraction. You’ll hike. You’ll wait. Then suddenly: marmots. Fat, furry, judgmental. They stare. You stare back. You feel seen — and not entirely approved of. That’s Arosa’s way.

There’s also the Arosa Bear Sanctuary, where rescued bears now roam free and practice emotional boundaries better than you ever will. One winked at me. I paid him $5. He earned it.

In winter, Arosa joins forces with neighboring Lenzerheide to create a ski area so sprawling it feels like a United Nations of Snow. Skiers, snowboarders, sledders, and one guy inexplicably on snowshoes all coexist in frosty harmony.

Public transport? Ethereal. Trains whisper. Buses glide. Even the elevators in your hotel probably meditate. You’ll arrive everywhere early and emotionally centered. A cow may nod in approval.

The food? Alpine comfort on a spiritual level. Rösti crisped like truth. Capuns that taste like ancestral forgiveness. Desserts made with berries you can’t pronounce but will now name your firstborn after.

You’ll leave Arosa fully hydrated, suspiciously relaxed, and in possession of three marmot plushies you swore you wouldn’t buy. You’ll talk about it as “a turning point.” And honestly? It was.
