Woolf’s diaries are, in substantial part, diaries about writing. She writes about what she is writing, what she plans to write, what she wrote and whether it was good, what the writing of the previous entry looked like from the distance of the current entry. The diary is at layer one. The writing about the diary is at layer two. The diary about the writing about the diary is at layer three. The BBC’s coverage apparatus has its own layer structure. Woolf’s diary has a different layer structure that produces better literature because the subject of the recursion is the mind engaging with its own process rather than the news apparatus engaging with its own output.
