Finally Finished Annotating My Entire Copy of a Dense Edwardian Novel and My Margins Are Now Genuinely Illegible

Violet Woolf’s diary on close reading, marginalia, and the state of a book that’s clearly been well loved

Every single page is covered now, some passages annotated so many times across different reads that later notes are written directly over earlier ones, a genuinely chaotic layered archaeology of my own changing opinions about this book stretching back nearly a decade. I finished the final page this week and sat for a long moment simply looking at the whole physical object, spine cracked, cover soft from handling, margins a genuine mess.

What the Layers Actually Show

My earliest notes, in a noticeably neater hand, mostly track plot and character, the kind of straightforward comprehension notes you’d expect from a first careful read. Later layers get considerably more argumentative, disagreeing with my own earlier interpretations, occasionally quite sharply, as though I’m in genuine dialogue with a younger version of myself across the same page.

The Specific Argument I Found Myself Having

One passage has three distinct rounds of commentary, my twenty-three-year-old self confidently asserting one reading, my twenty-eight-year-old self crossing it out with a considerably less charitable note, and my current self, this week, adding a third layer that partially defends the original interpretation while acknowledging the middle correction had a real point too.

Why I’ve Decided Not to Buy a Cleaner Copy

I could easily replace this book with a fresh, unmarked edition, and I have no intention of doing so. This specific, thoroughly annotated copy has become, over the years, nearly as interesting a document as the actual novel itself, a genuine record of how my own thinking has shifted against a fixed text that never moved at all.

What Comes Next for This Particular Copy

I’ll read it again, certainly, probably in another few years once whatever current interpretation I’ve settled on has had time to shift again. The margins are nearly full. I’ll have to start writing smaller, or perhaps finally admit defeat and start a second volume purely for commentary, though I suspect the mess itself is part of what makes this copy genuinely mine. Further diary entries continue at bohiney.com, with the original piece live at prat.uk.
