Backyard Bar Mitzvahs

A Torah, a trampoline, and two confused DJs

Not all bar mitzvahs are created equal. Some are held in synagogues. Others… behind Steve’s shed with a smoke machine and a Bluetooth speaker.

1. The Improvised Torah Reading
Read from a PDF printed at Staples. Mazel?

2. DJ Barry’s Remix of “Hava Nagila”
Now with extra dubstep and fog.

3. The Inflatable Bounce Tent Confession Booth
Two kids went in. One emerged with deep emotional growth.

4. Aunt Linda’s Interpretive Dance
Still talked about. Mostly in hushed tones.

5. Bagels from a gas station
They say lox, but it’s giving mystery fish.

Backyard bar mitzvahs: the sacred meets the suburban in one unforgettable afternoon of weird.
