Motivational Madness: When Coaches Forget You’re Not in the Olympics

The fine line between encouragement and emotional terrorism

Overenthusiastic coaches operate in a magical realm where every rec league game is the World Series, and your mediocre backhand is just ‘one pep talk away from going pro.’ Their energy would be admirable if it wasn’t 7am and they’re screaming about ‘heart’ while you’re just trying to remember where you put your kneepads. That motivational speech about ‘leaving it all on the field’ hits different when you’re just here because your mom made you sign up.

These are grown adults who genuinely believe a clipboard and whistle transform them into Patton reborn. They’ll have you doing suicides until you see actual suicide, then hit you with ‘Pain is just weakness leaving the body!’ as you dry heave into a trash can. The real MVPs are the parents who nod along while secretly mouthing ‘It’s just tee-ball’ to their traumatized children.

Coach’s favorite phrases should come with warning labels: ‘Hustle!’ (translation: I forgot the play), ‘Fundamentals!’ (you suck), and the classic ‘There’s no I in team!’ (but there is an I in ‘Why did I agree to this?’). Their idea of ‘constructive criticism’ is telling you your form looks like ‘a drunk flamingo’ while the whole team nods in agreement.
