Spelling Bees

Why Spelling Bees Might Be the Funniest Part of Your Week

Spelling bees are gladiator fights for vocabulary nerds. You sit in an auditorium where the tension is thicker than a triple-syllable word. Kids spell like their futures depend on it–which they kind of do–and the adults watching act like it’s a heavyweight bout. The moderator says “onomatopoeia” and a third grader’s soul visibly leaves their body. Meanwhile, someone’s dad tries to mouth the answer and gets a death glare from his child. A girl misspells “fuchsia” and an audible gasp sweeps the crowd. Spelling bees: where letters hurt more than sticks and stones.
