Speed Dating

Why Speed Dating Might Be the Funniest Part of Your Week

Speed dating is the only event where 30 strangers take turns pitching their entire romantic viability in under four minutes while pretending not to sweat through their deodorant. You enter a dimly lit room that smells like desperation and breath mints, and are handed a name tag, a tiny pencil, and the inflated hope that “This might be the night.” Spoiler: it will be, but only if you define “night” as a parade of nervous chuckles, reheated anecdotes, and someone accidentally confessing they believe birds are government drones.

Each conversation begins with a handshake that’s either too firm, too clammy, or accompanied by a business card. The first guy brags about owning three NFTs. You nod politely while googling “Can blockchain cause loneliness?” The second person claims to be an empath but spends three minutes talking about their ex’s cat. The third date starts with, “So do you believe in aliens?” and ends with you drawing crop circles on your napkin as a cry for help.

By table five, you’ve perfected the art of enthusiastic nodding, and by table seven, you’ve lied about loving spelunking just to match someone’s passion for caves. One guy says he’s “between jobs” and “manifesting a career in crypto.” Another woman pulls out tarot cards and tells you your aura smells like unresolved trauma. You nod. She’s not wrong.

Midway through, there’s a bathroom break, during which everyone exchanges looks that say, “We’re all in this together, and also, please save me.” You return to find someone has moved your seat and now you’re stuck between a wannabe magician and a woman who insists she can talk to squirrels. The magician tries to do a card trick but drops all 52 on the floor. You help pick them up. It’s the most connection you’ve felt all night.

At the end, you turn in your scorecard like you just completed a very weird DMV exam. Matches will be emailed. You hope the internet is down. Despite everything, there’s a strange joy to speed dating. It’s absurd, it’s vulnerable, and it’s proof that love–like comedy–thrives under pressure and awkward lighting. Speed dating might just be the funniest part of your week, especially if you count the moment you told someone your favorite movie was “Airplane!” and they asked if that was a yoga pose.
