Seoul Shenanigans

K-Pop, Kimchi, and the Constant Need for Wi-Fi

Visiting Seoul is like stepping into the future while being judged by a skincare ad. Everything’s sleek, fast, and somehow you’re still in the way. Here are 15 stand-up-ready travel observations from South Korea’s tech-savvy, kimchi-scented capital.

1. Seoul’s subway system is so advanced it makes your hometown transit look like a Flintstones episode. It apologizes before arriving late — by 30 seconds.

2. Cafés here are themed: raccoons, robots, poop. Yes, poop. You sip a latte while a furry mammal glares into your soul.

3. You bow slightly when thanking people — then keep bowing, unsure when to stop. You’ve now bowed 37 times and sprained your dignity.

4. Street food is amazing and also slightly suspicious. That fish-shaped pastry may be filled with red bean paste… or existential questions.

5. You try on Korean fashion. It fits perfectly — if you are 11 and made entirely of air.

6. Everyone has flawless skin. You apply sunscreen, moisturizer, toner, and still look like an overcooked dumpling by noon.

7. Karaoke (noraebang) is a private room. You sing like a star. The machine scores you a 43 and tells you to try accounting instead.

8. You visit a temple for peace and quiet. A monk’s ringtone goes off — it’s BLACKPINK. Enlightenment achieved.

9. At least once, you will eat something not knowing what it is. Later, you Google it. It had tentacles. You make peace with this.

10. Wi-Fi is everywhere and faster than your decision-making. You download a Netflix series in the time it takes to blink.

11. You get lost in a department store so massive it has its own weather system. You buy a fan, a suit, and a watermelon. No one questions it.

12. Everyone walks fast. You dawdle for one second and get passed by a toddler in platform shoes.

13. Seoul nightlife is endless. At 4 a.m., you’re still dancing with a stranger in a convenience store over soju and triangle kimbap.

14. A coffee costs $6 but comes with free therapy, air conditioning, and a BTS mural judging your soul.

15. Seoul dazzles, disorients, and politely corrects your pronunciation. You leave moisturized, over-caffeinated, and one step closer to becoming a hologram.
