Poetry slams are where emotions go to scream in rhythm. You walk in expecting quiet snaps and leave having been yelled at by three people in berets about the price of avocados and the politics of sidewalk chalk. Every performer has a backstory involving betrayal, jazz, and their Nana. The poems rhyme when they don’t have to and don’t rhyme when you beg them to. A guy named Blade performs a piece titled “Capitalism Is My Stepdad.” You tear up. You don’t know why. Poetry slams: art, angst, and accidental comedy gold.
