People Who Say “This Is Giving…”

Why People Who Say “This Is Giving…” Treat Language Like a Drag Show Prop

People Who Say “This Is Giving…” use the phrase like a verbal seasoning shaker, sprinkling it over every interaction. “This meeting is giving hostage vibes,” says a woman during a Q4 budget review. She’s wearing sunglasses indoors and drinking iced coffee in December. The spreadsheet is giving… confusion.

These theatrical commentators describe everything like it’s an outfit at the Met Gala. One man saw a grilled cheese and said, “It’s giving vintage dairy realness.” Another reviewed a coworker’s haircut with, “It’s giving 2007 MySpace admin energy.” She hasn’t spoken to him since. HR’s memo was giving… final warning.

In a fictional syntax saturation report by the Institute of Linguistic Overcommitment, 86% of chronic givers said the phrase “helps them express nuanced vibes.” The rest were too busy crafting “It’s giving…” TikToks about traffic, trauma, and toaster brands. One influencer captioned their breakfast photo: “It’s giving… eggsistential dread.” The toast agreed.

Expression is art. But if your entire vocabulary hinges on mood-based metaphors and runway-level drama about cereal, maybe diversify. Not everything needs to give. Some things just are. Unless it’s giving passive aggression–then say it with your chest. And maybe fewer filters.
