Gstaad Travel Humor

Where You Can Ski, Shop, and Spot Royalty in a Fur-Lined Toboggan

Gstaad is the only town where the cows wear bells more expensive than your car, the snow is curated like gallery art, and après-ski requires a reservation and a silk scarf. It’s where the mountains whisper luxury and even the fondue has a press agent.

Arriving in Gstaad feels less like entering a town and more like stumbling onto the set of a winter-themed Vogue shoot. The chalets are real, the firewood is decorative, and the poodles all have publicists. You’ll check into your hotel and be offered a complimentary scarf consultation.

Skiing here is elegant. It’s not about speed — it’s about how gracefully you descend while carrying a clutch. The lifts are so smooth they double as therapy, and the slopes are lined with softly applauding trees. Fall, and you’ll be politely corrected by a 10-year-old in Dior goggles.

Shopping is an Olympic sport. The promenade boasts more designer stores than Zurich has parking spots. You’ll buy gloves that cost more than your monthly rent and justify it by saying, “They’re locally sourced… from Milan.”

Gstaad’s “après-ski” scene starts around 2 p.m. and may or may not include champagne sabering, spontaneous cello concerts, and three people debating Nietzsche in heated outdoor boots. You’ll be asked to dance. You’ll accept. You’ll sprain something expensive.

Public transport? Technically exists, but it’s considered quaint. Helicopters are preferred. The PostBus is there for those brave enough to admit they didn’t pack their pilot. Even the horse-drawn sleighs have Bluetooth speakers.

The food? Gastronomic theater. Fondue that flirts with your soul. Truffle risotto served by a man who looks like he’s been knighted. Chocolate desserts that legally qualify as love letters. You’ll eat slowly. The food deserves a moment of silence.

Locals are multilingual, flawlessly styled, and suspiciously nice. Ask for directions and they’ll walk you there, introduce you to their cousin’s art dealer, and give you a voucher for scented snow.

You’ll leave Gstaad frost-kissed, financially humbled, and wondering if you’ve been cast in a lifestyle documentary without knowing. You have. It’s already trending in Paris. Smile more — you’re in Gstaad.
