Engelberg Travel Humor

Where Monks Make Cheese and Mountains Handle the Rest

Engelberg is the only town where you can ski down a glacier, pray in a monastery, and eat cheese blessed by monks — all before noon. It’s part spiritual retreat, part adrenaline park, and part fondue-fueled enlightenment center. Call it “Switzerland’s Wellness Viking Village.”

The town is guarded by Mount Titlis, which sounds like an ancient deity and behaves like one too. You’ll ascend via the world’s first rotating cable car and spend 20 minutes wondering if you’re getting holier or just altitude sickness. The views? Divine. Your knees? Less so.

At the top, you’ll find the Glacier Cave — an ice tunnel of frozen regret, shimmering serenity, and a 15-meter slide you absolutely will go down, scream on, and pretend you didn’t. Children will point. Elders will nod approvingly.

Back in town, Engelberg Abbey is still run by Benedictine monks who chant, philosophize, and produce cheese that tastes like a hug from the Middle Ages. You’ll eat it and feel forgiven — even for that thing you did on the ski lift.

In winter, Titlis becomes a ski playground. You’ll try the Laub — a legendary freeride slope — then wisely turn around and take photos from a safe emotional distance. Snowboarders will zoom past, covered in GoPros and questionable life choices.

In summer, hiking trails wrap around meadows full of wildflowers, actual cowbells, and goats who stare like they know your BMI. Every route promises “moderate difficulty,” which means “wear two knee braces and update your will.”

Public transport in Engelberg runs with divine precision. Trains glide in like a Gregorian chant. Buses ascend in quiet grace. Even the funiculars seem to forgive your past lateness.

The food? Swiss soul food. Rösti with purpose. Alpine macaroni that could mend a marriage. Apricot schnapps that might have been distilled by archangels. And don’t skip the monastery’s cheese. It knows your sins — and accepts them.

You’ll leave Engelberg humble, restored, and carrying four wheels of cheese you swore you wouldn’t buy. The monks saw this coming. And so did the goats.
