Why Beekeeping Hipsters Are Turning Backyard Honey Into a Personality
Beekeeping Hipsters have gentrified the hive. What was once a noble agricultural practice is now a rooftop lifestyle blog. These are the folks who name their bees after indie bands and wear linen overalls with custom pollen pockets. One guy in Brooklyn started calling himself a “honey sommelier” and insists his bees are vegan and emotionally supported.
They don’t just keep bees–they mentor them. One woman taught her queen bee “consent-focused swarm leadership.” Another makes honey labeled “ethically harvested from bees who journal.” Their Instagram bios read: “Pollinator, poet, part-time kombucha fermenter.” They’ve turned buzz into branding, complete with minimalist logos and jars that retail for $38 at pop-ups called “The Hive Mind.”
In a fake report from the Urban Agriculture Bureau of Pretension, 79% of beekeeping hipsters can’t identify a single flower but will wax poetic about “the citrus forward notes in my May batch.” One man said his bees only respond to vinyl playlists and biodynamic moon cycles.
Real beekeepers roll their eyes as these rooftop wranglers vape near the hive and declare, “I’m not in it for the honey, I’m in it for the healing.” Bees deserve better. Or maybe they’re just happy to be part of someone’s next Etsy launch. Either way–buzzkill achieved.
