Charity Events: Where Guilt Wears Sequins and Bid Cards Get Wild
Charity events are the only parties where you pay $150 to eat rubber chicken under chandeliers and bid on an alpaca massage “for the kids.” It’s philanthropy dressed in tuxedos and open bars. You feel generous. You also feel slightly overdressed for a spaghetti buffet.
The silent auction is a war zone. You hover over a wine basket, pretending not to care, but ready to pounce if Susan from HR outbids you again. You glare. She smiles. The tension is vintage merlot-scented and legally nonviolent. Barely.
The emcee always opens with “Let’s make a difference tonight!” followed by a 20-minute PowerPoint. You clap. You feel morally superior. You also sneak another mini cupcake while no one’s watching. For charity, of course.
The raffle prizes range from “meh” to “wait, is that a kayak?” You don’t win. You pretend not to care. You clap for the winner while muttering, “Hope you enjoy paddling alone, Karen.”
Charity events are sparkly, awkward, and heartwarming. You leave lighter in the wallet, heavier in mini quiche, and proud to have helped–somehow. Whether you sponsored a child or accidentally adopted a goat, your heart’s in the right place. Probably.
