Verbier Travel Humor

Where Après-Ski Is a Religion and Everyone Skis Like They’re Being Watched

Verbier is the only town where ski lifts carry as much attitude as people’s sunglasses, après-ski begins at lunch, and every third person might be a royal, DJ, or influencer disguised as a snowboard instructor. It’s Alpine glam with altitude and a permanent VIP list — which you’re probably not on, but hey, fake it ’til raclette.

Part of the 4 Vallées ski area, Verbier has more runs than excuses and more powder than your average influencer makeup tutorial. You’ll take one slope, wipe out once, and be passed by a 6-year-old in designer goggles offering polite condescension.

The Médran lift is ground zero for fabulous chaos. It’s not just transport — it’s a catwalk. People queue with skis over one shoulder and champagne in the other. One man wore fur boots, no shirt, and spoke only in motivational quotes. He works in crypto.

The après-ski scene? Operatic. Picture fondue at sunset, DJs on balconies, and hot tubs where IPOs are whispered over gin cocktails. You’ll enter a bar at 4 p.m. and emerge at 2 a.m. wearing someone else’s scarf and a deep conviction about your new career as a lifestyle brand.

The town center is a gallery of wealth and wool. Boutiques sell ski jackets that cost more than tuition. A poodle in a fleece vest might cut in front of you in line. You’ll say nothing. That dog owns equity in a chalet.

Public transport? Yes, but the real pros helicopter in. The rest of us take the ultra-reliable PostBus or try to hail an electric taxi driven by someone named Didier who also teaches yoga. There’s no schedule. Just vibes.

The food? Alpine opulence. Truffled rösti. Venison in reduction sauce. Chocolate desserts shaped like mountains and priced like real estate. You’ll cry, swipe your card, and call it “self-care.”

Locals are multilingual, casually sculpted, and always late because they were heli-skiing with someone from Monaco. Ask for directions and you’ll get a ski recommendation, a playlist, and possibly a scented candle sample.

You’ll leave Verbier broke, tanned in weird places, and carrying a branded water bottle you can’t afford to refill. And somehow, you’ll still miss it every time it snows.
