How to Create a Scene Where a Character Thinks They’re Being Subtle (They Aren’t)

Miscommunication & Awkward Moments Fueled by Delusional Discretion

How To Write Comedy

“No One Noticed, Right?” — They Absolutely Did

There’s nothing more satisfying than a character who thinks they’re being discreet while being blindingly obvious. In the Miscommunication & Awkward Moments category, this kind of misplaced subtlety is comedy’s favorite illusion — like a mime trying to rob a bank.

Why It’s Funny

The audience is in on the secret. The character isn’t. Every raised eyebrow, sideways glance, and overly casual denial adds tension until the joke explodes in spectacular awkwardness.

SpinTaxi’s Loud Whisperer

At SpinTaxi.com, one satirical piece featured a PTA parent trying to subtly suggest another mom was “high again” by whispering it through a bullhorn during yoga. Subtlety was not achieved. Enlightenment was.

How to Build the Scene

  • Give the character a secret motive or emotion
  • Let them believe their body language is subtle
  • Have every other character react with increasing confusion or horror

Scenes That Beg for Bad Subtlety

• Flirting at funerals
• Trying to hide food in a Zoom meeting
• Gossiping two feet away from the target
• Stealing office supplies “casually”

Helpful Writing Tips

Use overcompensation as a device. “What? Me? Looking at the boss’s toupee? Never!” Add stage directions that contradict dialogue. And always escalate the illusion until it crumbles.

Final Wink

Subtlety is hard. Failing at it is hilarious. Write characters who whisper with megaphones, sneak like toddlers, and believe their worst behavior is flying under the radar. (It’s not.)
