Why Workplace “Fun Committees” Are Neither Fun Nor a Committee
Workplace “Fun Committees” are the HR version of a clown car–bright, loud, and one balloon animal away from a nervous breakdown. These are the people who schedule a 4:00 PM “Mandatory Mingle” and call it team-building while Karen from payroll cries quietly into her cupcake.
Despite the name, there’s rarely consensus or actual fun. One guy suggested karaoke, and now every Friday ends in emotional injury. Another proposed “Wellness Wednesdays,” which turned into group stretching in front of the vending machine while Gary did lunges in slacks. In a fictional corporate survey, 89% of employees said Fun Committee events were “worse than root canal,” and 11% said “at least the root canal had snacks.”
These committees thrive on seasonal decor, questionable icebreakers, and email subject lines like “FALL INTO FUN ??.” One woman planned a scavenger hunt around printer toner. She now leads trust falls with dead eyes. And nothing says morale like a forced limbo contest while your inbox hemorrhages fire drills.
Real fun can’t be scheduled by spreadsheet. But try telling that to the person ordering 400 “Live Laugh Audit” koozies for the corporate luau. The only thing worse than low morale is a budget line labeled “Balloon Arch: Q3.”
